The center of the row isn't neutral.

Ask people to pick one of several identical items — same product, same everything, laid out in a line — and they don’t choose at random. They reach for the middle. Christenfeld showed it with rows of indistinguishable products: put four of them in a row and the two center positions win far more often than one-in-four odds would predict. Later work (Rodway and colleagues on the “center-stage effect”; Valenzuela and Raghubir on the middle-of-the-row heuristic) found the center pulls two things at once — attention lingers there, and choice follows. People also believe the important or most-popular option lives in the middle, so sellers put it there, and buyers, half-knowing the convention, meet them there. The belief and the behavior feed each other.

It’s worth separating this from a neighbor. A week ago the wedge covered the serial-position effect — that we remember the start and end of a sequence and lose the middle. This is almost its mirror image, and a different mechanism: when the items are all in front of you at once and you’re choosing rather than recalling, the middle isn’t the forgotten slot — it’s the favored one. Memory punishes the middle of a sequence you move through; attention rewards the middle of an array you survey. Don’t let one overwrite the other in your head.

The build decision is small and concrete. Any time you lay options out horizontally — three pricing tiers, a row of plan cards, a shelf of templates — the position carries a thumb on the scale whether you meant it to or not. There is no neutral arrangement. Left-to-right order is a choice you’re making for the user; you might as well make it on purpose.

So put the option you most want chosen — ideally because it’s the one that’s right for most people — in the center.

This is why nearly every pricing page you’ve seen puts the “recommended” plan in the middle, in a taller card, wearing a badge. That’s not a coincidence or a copied cliché — it’s three effects stacked in one spot. The center-stage pull, the compromise effect (people avoid the extremes and settle toward the middle of a range — a different mechanism, same winner), and an explicit “most popular” label all point at the same card.

The ethics line is where this earns its keep. A nudge that steers people toward the plan that genuinely fits them is a service — you’re spending your knowledge of the catalog on their behalf. A nudge that buries the honest cheap option in a corner so the center can sell them more than they need is the same mechanism pointed the wrong way. The tool doesn’t care which; you have to. The test I’d use: if the user learned why that plan was in the middle, would they feel helped or handled?

And when it’s genuinely a wash — options that really are equivalent — know that “let them choose freely” is a fiction. The middle will win anyway. Decide what should sit there.
