Try to notice the feeling the next time you hear a claim for the second or third time. Not agreement, exactly — something quieter and underneath it. A little click of oh, right, that one. A sense of familiarity that arrives dressed up as a sense of truth. It turns out those two feelings are much harder for your brain to keep separate than you’d hope.
In 1977, researchers Hasher, Goldstein, and Toppino ran a study that has been replicated more times than almost anyone can count. They gave people a long list of trivia-style statements — some true, some false — and asked them to rate how likely each was to be true. Then they did it again a couple of weeks later, and again after that, quietly repeating some of the statements across sessions while introducing new ones. The result was clean and a little disturbing: the statements people had seen before were rated as more true than the new ones. Repetition alone — not evidence, not argument — nudged the needle toward true. And it worked on false statements just as well as true ones.
They called it the illusory truth effect, and the mechanism underneath it is the interesting part.
When you encounter something for the first time, your brain has to work a little to process it — parse the words, retrieve the concepts, assemble the meaning. The second time, that work is easier; the path is already worn. Psychologists call this ease processing fluency, and here’s the trap: the brain reads fluency as a signal of truth. It makes a quiet, sensible-sounding bet — things that are true tend to be things I’ve encountered before and can process smoothly, so if this feels smooth and familiar, it’s probably true. In an ancestral world where you mostly heard accurate things from trusted people around you, that shortcut was a decent one. In a world of repeated slogans, viral claims, and headlines you scroll past six times, it’s a liability. The feeling of fluency can be manufactured by nothing more than repetition, and your brain will happily cash it in as evidence.
The genuinely unsettling finding came later. You might assume this only works on things you don’t know — that repetition can only sway you where you’re ignorant. Fazio and colleagues tested exactly that in 2015, and found that prior knowledge doesn’t reliably save you. People who knew the correct answer to a fact still rated a repeated false version as more true than a false statement they were seeing for the first time. Knowing better provided some protection, but not immunity. The familiarity signal leaks in underneath the knowledge and tugs, even when the accurate answer is sitting right there in your head.
Sit with that for a second, because it rewires how you should feel about repetition generally. Every catchphrase that “just feels right.” Every “everybody knows” fact you can’t actually source. Every claim that’s been in the air so long it feels less like an argument and more like weather. Some of those are true. But the feeling of settledness you have about them is not, on its own, evidence that they are — it may be nothing more than the accumulated residue of having heard them a lot. The fluency is real; what it’s pointing at might not be.
There’s no clean cure for this, because you can’t turn off fluency — it’s doing useful work most of the time, and you’d be paralyzed without the shortcut. But you can install one small habit that helps: when a claim feels obviously true, feels like something no reasonable person would question, treat that very smoothness as a prompt to ask a plain question — how do I actually know this? Where did it come from? Sometimes the answer is solid. Sometimes you realize, a little embarrassed, that the entire foundation is “I’ve heard it a lot.” That’s the tell. The most repeated things get the strongest feeling of truth and often the weakest memory of evidence, precisely because familiarity was doing the work that scrutiny was supposed to.
The humbling takeaway is that your sense of what’s true is not a clean readout of what you’ve verified. It’s tangled up with what you’ve simply encountered — and the more times something has passed through your mind, the harder it becomes to tell the difference between I have good reason to believe this and I have heard this before.
