At nineteen he came down with something that felt like a bad stomach flu. When it lifted, a stranger part of it stayed. He could no longer feel where his body was. Not paralysed — his muscles still worked, his strength was intact. But the sense that tells you, without a glance, that your legs are crossed or your hand has drifted near the cup was simply gone, from the neck down. Close his eyes and he had no idea where his own limbs were. If the lights went out while he was moving, he crumpled to the floor. To do anything at all — to sit, to stand, to reach — he had to watch: to steer each limb by eye, deliberately, the way you’d operate a crane through a window.
The sense he lost has a name most people never learn because they never have cause to: proprioception. The physiologist Charles Sherrington coined it more than a century ago and called it, aptly, our “secret sense.” Buried in your muscles are tiny stretch detectors called muscle spindles; in your tendons, gauges of tension; in your joints, reporters of angle. Together they stream a ceaseless bulletin — this muscle is this long, that joint is at that angle, this tendon is under that much load — up into the brain, which fuses the whole feed into a single, seamless, entirely unconscious model of where “you” are in space. It runs so silently that almost no one knows they possess it. It is the reason you can clap in the dark, climb stairs without counting them, and bring a fork to your mouth without aiming.
The man — Ian Waterman, followed for decades by the neurologist Jonathan Cole — had been hit by a rare autoimmune reaction that stripped out a specific class of large sensory nerve fibres: the ones carrying position sense and light touch. Crucially, it spared the motor nerves running out to the muscles, and spared pain and temperature. So the wiring that commanded his body was fine; the wiring that reported back from it was gone. What was left is one of neurology’s most quietly astonishing feats — a person who rebuilt, through years of relentless conscious effort and constant visual attention, an approximation of the automatic body-model the rest of us are simply handed at birth and never think about again.
What the loss lays bare is a fact the working version keeps hidden: the body you feel yourself living inside is not delivered to you by the flesh. It’s a model the brain draws and constantly redraws from a torrent of signals, and proprioception is most of the ink. It’s worth being precise about what this is not, because it has neighbours that get confused with it. It isn’t the rubber-hand illusion, where the brain is fooled into owning a fake limb — Waterman never doubted the hands were his. It isn’t the phantom limb, where a body-map persists after the limb is gone — his limbs were all present, owned, and obedient. What vanished was purely the positional sense, and with it, the effortlessness. His arms didn’t stop being his. They stopped telling him where they were.
And that reframes something you’d never otherwise question. Standing still feels like the absence of activity. It isn’t. Staying upright is a continuous, high-speed correction problem, solved below awareness largely on proprioceptive feedback — which is why it’s the loss of this sense, not of vision or muscle, that takes the literal ground out from under a person. Every ordinary reach is a computation. You just never see the bill, because it was paid before you noticed the arm had moved.
So: wiggle your toes without looking down. The fact that you knew where they were before you moved them — that you didn’t have to find them first — is the secret sense doing its quiet, tireless job. It has never once asked for your attention, and it never will. Right up until, for a very unlucky few, it stops.
