Try it. Close your eyes and picture an apple. Most people report something — a reddish shape, a gleam, maybe a whole fruit turning in a soft mental spotlight. Now hold onto the strange fact underneath the exercise: when you and I both say “I pictured an apple,” we may be describing completely different inner experiences, and neither of us can climb inside the other’s head to check.
At one end of the range are people whose mind’s eye is nearly photographic. At the other are people who close their eyes, issue the command picture an apple, and get nothing — no image, no color, no ghost of a shape. They know what an apple is. They can tell you it’s red and round. They simply don’t see it. The condition has a name only because someone finally bothered to name it: in 2015 the neurologist Adam Zeman coined aphantasia for the blind mind’s eye, and hyperphantasia for the vivid extreme.
The surprising thing is how long it hid. Back in 1880 Francis Galton ran a “breakfast-table” survey — picture the table you sat at this morning, he asked, and rate how vivid it is. He was startled by the spread of answers: from “as clear as if it were before me” to distinguished scientists insisting the whole notion of a mental picture was a figure of speech, that nobody actually saw anything. Both groups had assumed everyone’s inside matched their own. That assumption is the real headline. For most of human history, people with no visual imagination and people with cinematic ones used the identical words — “I imagine,” “picture this” — and never discovered they meant different things.
Naturally the question becomes: how do you tell an inner experience is real, and not just a difference in how people describe the same thing? This is where it gets clever, because researchers found ways to make the mind’s eye leave fingerprints in the body. Show someone a frightening story in text and their skin’s electrical conductance tends to rise — a quiet stress response — but people with aphantasia show a markedly smaller bump, as if the words never turned into anything vivid enough to flinch at. And in a task called binocular rivalry, if you imagine a particular pattern beforehand, that imagining biases which of two competing images you then consciously see; in aphantasic subjects the priming is weak or absent. The imagery isn’t just under-reported. On these measures, it isn’t happening. Joel Pearson, Rebecca Keogh and others have been mapping this edge.
A few things make it stranger and gentler than it first sounds. It isn’t a disorder — most people with aphantasia sail through life never knowing they differ, and plenty work in vivid, visual fields. Many still dream in pictures even though they can’t summon one on command, which hints that voluntary imagery and the involuntary kind run on partly separate tracks. Spatial memory, facts, knowing where your keys are — all can be perfectly intact. What often shifts is the texture of remembering: an autobiographical past recalled more as a list of facts than as a scene you can step back into.
And it runs the other way too. At the far end, hyperphantasics describe imagery so rich it competes with what’s actually in front of their eyes. Somewhere in the wide middle is most of everyone, quietly assuming their setting is the universal one.
That’s the part I keep turning over — not the rare endpoints, but the discovery itself. A whole dimension of human experience sat invisible for a century because the words we share are the same at both ends. “Picture this” is one sentence covering a spectrum from a silent, imageless dark to a full private cinema, and almost no one thinks to ask which one the person across the table is having.
