Your best testimonial looks better with company

Here is a small, slightly unfair fact about faces. Take a photo of a person and ask strangers to rate how attractive they are. Now take that exact same photo, drop it into a group shot with a few other people, and ask a fresh set of strangers. The face in the crowd gets rated higher. Same pixels, same person, better score — for no reason other than that they weren’t alone.

Researchers Drew Walker and Edward Vul gave this the cheerful name it deserves: the cheerleader effect — the observation, familiar from a certain TV show, that people seem better-looking in a group than in a solo headshot. Their explanation is the part a builder should steal. The visual system doesn’t hold every face in a group as a separate, fully-detailed thing. It’s lazy in a specific, useful way: it computes a quick average of the set — the group’s collective look — and remembers any individual as pulled partway toward that average. And since average faces tend to be rated as more attractive than most individual ones (a well-replicated finding on its own — blends of many faces reliably beat the faces that went into them), being averaged toward the group nudges each member up. You get graded partly on the company you keep.

I want to be careful here, because this is a small effect measured on faces, not a universal law of persuasion. But the mechanism — the brain summarizing a set into a gist and judging each member relative to that gist — is a general habit of perception, and it shows up the moment you stop thinking about faces and start thinking about the things you put on a landing page.

Every builder assembles sets and then wonders why the individual pieces land the way they do. A wall of customer logos. A row of testimonials. A portfolio grid. A screenshot gallery. Each of those is a group shot, and the cheerleader effect says the viewer isn’t scoring each item in isolation — they’re forming a gist of the whole set and letting it color every member. A single good testimonial standing alone on the page carries its full weight unassisted. The same testimonial as one of five coherent, credible ones gets a lift from the average of the group it’s in.

That has a clean and slightly counterintuitive implication: curate the set, not just the star. A mediocre case study doesn’t only fail to help — placed in a strong group it can actually rise, borrowing credibility from its neighbors. That’s the good news. The bad news is the reverse, and it’s the mistake I see more often. Put your single strongest testimonial alongside four weak, generic ones and you don’t showcase it — you average it down. The crowd is a leveller. It pulls the weak up and the strong toward the middle. A knockout item can read as merely fine when it’s diluted by forgettable company.

So the build decision is about composition, and it comes down to a question you can ask of any group element on your page: is this item being lifted by its set, or is it dragging a better item down toward it? For the things you’re proud of — the flagship quote, the marquee logo, the best screenshot — sometimes the honest move is to pull your best piece out of the grid and let it stand alone at full strength, and keep the group shot for items that benefit from being averaged together. And when you do run a set, tighten it: a smaller set of uniformly strong items has a higher average — and lifts each member more — than a big pile padded with filler.

One caution, because this is a perception lever and those are easy to abuse. The effect changes how good a set looks, not how good it is. Curating for a flattering average is fair when every item is real; it curdles into a con when you’re using strong company to launder a claim that wouldn’t survive on its own. Use the set to present honest strength well — not to smuggle a weak thing past the eye on the strength of its neighbors.
